About Me
London based technology consultant, web entrepreneur, and developer.
Engaged with computers for as long as I can remember, I now spend my time developing web applications or providing social media and technology advice. I am a co-founder and the main techie behind Retaggr.
I have a strong interest in the confluence of semantic data, strong AI, and other transhumanist ideas. Despite this, I'm still someone you might invite to a party.
I love chatting to other entrepreneurs and tech minded people. If you're in central London, ping me for a coffee.

A project of mine (Retaggr) does lifestreaming to, and you can put it all under your own domain.View my page : http://niksmit.me for an example. | Hi Xavier, Thanks for joining the Retaggr community! And for the positive feedback Look out for some extra stuff coming in Jan.With regards to the twitter delay - the problem unfortunately lies with twitter. They’re having an issue getting notifications out for all their members at all times. It looks like they’re making some headway on the issue though, so with any luck it should be back to normal (less than 2 minute delay) soon. Let us know if you need anything else All the best.Read more comments by niksmit | |
| Why blogging comments suck a year ago | |
| The problem of context, and being able to get more info about someone, without leaving the page, is *exactly* what we do.Your Retaggr Card is sort of a business card 2.0. All your personal, social and professional info, is in there, and the content you generate on on the web (Flickr, twitter, etc.) is there too. But here’s the cool bit : add our wordpress (.org) plugin, and when people leave comments on your blog, instead of just having the url to the person, their Retaggr card pops up and does exactly what you want Robert - you can see their Friendfeed, twitter, etc., and get to know them.Think of it as the gravatar idea but taken to the next level. You can see it in action on our test blog : http://www.spicevine.comOr more info : http://www.retaggr.comRead more comments by niksmit | |
| Why Monetize Twitter? a year ago | |
| Some quick comments : 1. As you say - this would be shooting Twitter in it’s own foot, inhibiting free flow and up take. Bad idea.2. Many of these would be difficult to set up as premium due to Twitters distribution of content via API. 3rd party clients can already build this, and indeed much of the functionality you mentioned is already available from them. Turning off the api would not be an option, and limiting it impossible. 3. I think this could definitely work to an extent, especially with gmail-like semantic understanding. 4. Agreed, but small fry in the big scheme of things, unless they became copyright nazis and tried to stop well meaning fans from printing their own t-shirts, which again is not in the spririt of things. 5. Possibly, but the case has not been proven. Also, see Yammer.6. Same as point 1 - charging third parties for access to the data would kill Twitter. Gnipcentral is however charging for value-add on top of the base data. Once anyone has the data, hard to charge for analytics.7. I’m not going to argue with Rob It will indeed be interesting to see what they announce.Read more comments by niksmit | |

| Twitter Election Page is Disgusting! a year ago | |
| Get your points, especially about spam, but we thoroughly enjoyed watching the debate on tv, with that twitter page scrolling past next to it on a laptop. Provided a great barometer as to how the world at large was reacting. And although its an American election, its hard to argue that the result doesn’t affect most people, American or not, so there is still significant relevancy to those outside the states, like myself.Lastly, the different views these two will make a direct impact on how hard it is for people to “make a dime” in the future. My 2c Read more comments by niksmit | |

| Re: Cloud computing brings us rain 2 years ago | |
| Agreed. Its a bit premature, but we have to start somewhere. The current incarnation of cloud apps solves problems in certain well defined areas, but not all, and has its vulnerabilities. But traditional apps in the traditional environment have their limitations and risks too, as emsquared pointed out. I agree with you Roland - we need an umbrella - but its not too hard to imagine a future where the cloud *is* reliable, and we stop thinking about it - like electricity. | |
| Re: louisgray.com: As I Get Older, Some Online "Friending" Gets Creepier 2 years ago | |
| My 2c is that there's something incredibly wrong with inhibiting totally positive innocent actions (like just being friendly to someone 10 years younger than you, or helping a young child across the street) because of some *possible* *perceived* social infraction.Only the guilty should feel guilty, but recently our societal norms seem to reinforce this collective guilt idea. At the risk of sounding like a hippy, we need all the positivity, mentoring, and free exchange of ideas we can get - not less.Surely we should be judging people based on what they do - a meritocracy. The internet is fantastic in levelling the playing fields (location, gender, race, etc.) - (further hippy alert) ideally those ideas would become more expressed in the real world too.I agree with Peter - how we deal with this online will either further encourage the media sensationalisation, or perhaps curb it. Actually discussing it is a great first step though, as I think a lot of people keep these thoughts in their heads, and end up just erring on the side of caution by default. | |
| Re: Retaggr - An Interactive Business Card 2 years ago | |
| Hi Corvida! Thanks for checking out retaggr :) We're just getting going, so any feedback is welcome.Couldn't agree with your more - customization is a key part of a card like this, and it's on our todo list. Ultimately you will have a large amount of control over how your card looks. They key part about retaggr that makes it interesting though is that it follows you around the web. It really is quite different in its focus than mybloglog. With retaggr, if you comment on another (retaggr enabled) website, your Profile Card will be left there, against your comment, as a popup. When your readers are looking at comments, they can now find out exactly who the commentor is, without leaving your site, and interact with the widgets in the card. For the blog, this is great, as it adds a whole bunch of relevance and encourages a community that know each other better. For the person leaving the comment, its good because they can get better visibility on their online life (if they choose), be contactable, and express themself business-wise, or personally. A good example is this very comment. It will automatically go into my Disqus widget on my card. But I use cocomment too and unfortunately my cocomment comments are invisible to your users. My retaggr card has both, so on a retaggr enabled blog they would see a complete picture.p.s Great site - added it straight into my RSS reader :) | |
| Cache your blog pages (The top 2 ways to turbocharge your WordPress blog — WP Project) 2 years ago | |
| One of the things that affects page load speed the most is the number of *separate* files (css /javascript, etc) referenced from your page. Even if the files themselves are small, the overhead of making the connection is what kills performance. YSlow from Yahoo (http://www.yahooapis.com/yslow/ ) can help identify this, and other issues. HTH | |
| Re: Disqus - the non-stupid version 2 years ago | |
